On the eve of World War II, Japanese-occupied Taiwan can be a very dangerous place for an American, but Gary Gatlin is singularly determined to achieve his mission. He earns the trust of Japanese farmers and Chinese fruit sellers, but to survive, he must also gain the trust of foreign spies, local kidnappers, untrusting military officials and a beautiful, headstrong woman who he may never see again. Will Gary be able to make it out alive?
Carl F. Haupt lived as a hobo during the Great Depression when he was 15 years old. Carl served in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1966 with the rank of Master Sergeant. In 1992, Carl and his wife Sarah started helping struggling families in Agua Prieta, Mexico, across the border from Douglas, Arizona. They brought food and other necessities, helped build over 100 homes and delivered 25 donated mobile homes. All author royalties from Gary Gatlin: Reluctant Hero go to Angels on the Border, a non-profit organization established by Carl and his wife to continue their charitable work.
