What the Heart Sees

Friends since childhood Zach and Ethan come from different worlds… and it’s never been more apparent.

For the past semester, Ethan has been struggling with a botched operation that cost him what remained of his vision. He lives in a squalid apartment with his loving aunt and his alcoholic mother, barely scraping by. How can he tell rich-boy Zach, who has the perfect life, that he has gone blind?

When Zach returns from a semester abroad, the only thing on his mind is confessing his love for Ethan. Discovering Ethan has lost his sight doesn’t change his feelings. Desperate to prove his love, he comes out to his conservative parents—and finds himself disowned.

Cut off by his family, Zach has only Ethan to lean on. But how can he, when Ethan suffers one devastating personal loss after another? Instead Zach resolves to stand on his own and do what it takes to support them both.

Through grief, denial, depression, trauma, and therapy, Zach and Ethan struggle to be there for each other. Will their love be enough for them to build a future together that is nothing like either of them ever imagined?

Ileana Lallain

Ileana Lallain is a twenty-three-year-old French-born but California-raised coffee addict. She’s been writing since she could hold a pencil, though she hopes she has improved since then, considering every word of her first short story was horribly misspelled. She has dreamed of publishing since she wrote her first novel at the age of twelve, and although that novel will never see the light of day, she remembers it fondly and occasionally dusts it off to remind herself how far she’s come since writing that story. When she isn’t torturing characters and readers alike with her love of angst, she enjoys playing video games and putting on fun makeup looks. However, her absolute favorite thing is to curl up in her recliner on a rainy day with a good book, a cup of coffee, some soft classical music, and a lavender candle. And of course her cat, who absolutely demands use of her lap and her full attention, even (especially) when she really needs to go somewhere.

Ileana never imagined she would write romance novels, let alone M/M romance, since that was an interest she kept secret from all but her two closest friends, but her first attempt at writing an M/M fan fiction with the most bizarre pairing imaginable (thanks to picking character names out of a hat) was so enjoyable, she decided to try her hand at writing an original story with two characters she holds close to her heart. From the first word to the last, she loved every second of writing that story and knew this was the perfect genre for her.
