Natural Instincts

Most people would consider near perfect recall, an ability to crunch numbers that rivals a computer's, and an uncanny knack for predicting the stock market to be remarkable gifts. But for Kyle, those abilities also curse him to recall every moment of his horrible, abusive past. Searching for an escape, he takes his therapist’s advice and leaves his finance job behind for a weeklong camping trip on a remote lake in Vermont. He’s not sure how a week in seclusion with nothing but his own thoughts for company will be the reprieve he needs. Then he stumbles across a man engaged in a pagan ritual and is drawn into mysteries he never dreamed existed, and realizes nature is more distracting than he thought.

M. Raiya

M. Raiya knew she was a writer since second grade when her teacher kept her in for recess to get extra help because “Somebody had better teach you about semicolons!” She started her first fantasy trilogy in fifth grade. She majored in writing in college, got her master’s degree in English, published some literary fiction, and fortunately emerged from all that with her imagination unscathed.

She is a fifth-generation Vermonter and often needs four-wheel drive to reach her winter home on a dirt road in the mountains. In the summer, she lives in camp on top of a thirty-foot cliff overlooking Lake Champlain. Her other passions besides writing are bird-watching, nature photography, kayaking, and swimming. She takes lots of long walks with a camera and a pair of binoculars. Or she might be found in the lake or in a handy swimming pool in the winter, since she has distant mermaid ancestry.

She is married and has two artistic daughters, two cats who demand that they lie between her and her laptop whenever she dares to sit down, and a red Labrador retriever who makes sure she gets lots of exercise. She worked for seventeen years as a paraeducator in the special education department of a nearby high school, helping students in their humanities classes.

M. Raiya’s novel Depth of Return won first place in the 2017 Rainbow Awards in the Gay Paranormal Romance category, and her novel Another Healing was a finalist in the 2015 Rainbow Awards.
